Troubleshooting

If your trolley is suffering from one of the following, click on the text to see the
possible cause and remedy.

Trolley does not free wheel away from you easily when not under power or is generally difficult to manoeuvre when not under power.

Freeway trolley will not lock together in the closed position.

Trolley will not go straight.

Movement in the top bag stay – your bag tends to flop to one side.

Trolley not doing eighteen holes.

The handle won’t tighten up.

Trolley won’t switch off fully. You can still hear buzzing when the switch appears to be turned off.

Freeway or post 2000 classic trolley appears dead.

The axle turns but the wheels don’t go round.

The trolley races at full speed.

Trolley keeps cutting out.

Problem: Trolley does not free wheel away from you easily when not under power or is generally difficult to manoeuvre when not under power.

Cause
It is most likely that the clutches have seized. Each wheel should rotate freely in the direction of travel and turn the axle in reverse.

Solution
Replace the clutches. Parts PK 234/5 on the Powakaddy classic 95 onwards exploded diagram. If you have a Freeway you may have internal clutches in which case you will need to replace the wheel code PK998 or PK999 on the Freeway page.

Problem: Freeway trolley will not lock together in the closed position.

Cause
This will be either the middle central beam (PK3005) straightening or the upper central beam (PK3006) bending.

Solution
To identify which part is out of tolerance you will need a second trolley for comparison. Line the two trolleys up side by side, wheel to wheel and look through them from the side. The problem part should be apparent. Order the replacement part on the Freeway page.

Problem: Trolley will not go straight.

Solution
Newer trolleys are fitted with an adjustable front wheel housing which has a slot on the left-hand side where the wheel spindle goes through. Through trial and error, you should be able to solve the problem by moving the spindle back and forwards.
Please be aware that the way you load your bag and course conditions can affect tracking. If possible use a bag such as sold by Powakaddy which are logically laid out and balanced for trolley use.

Problem: Movement in the top bag stay – your bag tends to flop to one side.

Cause
Missing rivets from under part PK 3013 (see Freeway diagram)

Solution
Replace rivets. It is important when replacing pop or solid rivets to use genuine Powakaddy parts, as they are to the correct technical specification. Order rivets from the Freeway page -–we will supply extra stabilizing advice with the parts.

Problem: Trolley not doing eighteen holes.

Cause
There are to many possible causes to mention here. The battery (usually the first thing people think of) is only one of the possible causes. It could be the charger, gearbox, controller, motor etc…..

Solution
This is a job for a Powakaddy service agent if you want to avoid the possibility of making an expensive mistake. Your nearest Powakaddy agent can be found on the drop down menu on the workshop page of their website, www.powakaddy.com.

Problem: The handle won’t tighten up.

Cause
The locking mechanism has probably worn out.

Solution
Replace parts PK232A and PK310 on the classic 2000 onwards page.

Problem: Trolley won’t switch off fully. You can still hear buzzing when the switch appears to be turned off.

Cause
Usually this is the potentiometer going out of tolerance. It will not return to zero and causes the trolley to buzz or creep. The potentiometer is the electrical part connected to the knob which you turn to make the trolley go.

Solution
Replace the potentiometer, there are no serviceable parts in it.

Problem: Freeway or post 2000 classic trolley appears dead.

Cause
Your trolley has a safety feature called high pedal disable, which prevents unexpected take off when you first connect the battery. It works like this – when you connect the battery the controller (the trolley's electronic brain) checks that the potentiometer (the knob you rotate to make the trolley go) is at zero, and will not operate unless it registers zero. This prevents the trolley racing off unexpectedly when you are putting it together. If the "pot" is out of tolerance the controller cannot register zero and therefore the trolley remains dead to all intents and purposes.

Solution
Replace potentiometer.

Problem: The axle turns but the wheels don’t go round.

Cause
The wheels have been removed and replaced the wrong way round.

Solution
Take wheels off and replace the opposite way round.

Problem: The trolley races at full speed.

Cause
Possible potentiometer or controller problem.

Solution
There is no definitive answer to this one. The only answer is to replace parts in rotation (usually starting with the cheapest) until the problem is solved. We are happy to supply parts on a solve or return basis to enable you to correct the problem without having to buy parts you don’t actually need.

Problem: The trolley keeps cutting out.

Cause
Possible cable and jack plug problem, or brushes worn too low (older trolleys).

Solution
With the wheels off the ground, wiggle the cable and see if it cuts out. To check the brushes, these are where the wires from the controller join the motor. Slide the black covers back and they can betaken out. They should be at least 1.5cm long. If not then they need replacing irrespective of whether they are the cause of the original problem.
